| The GCSE Physical Education and Health Curriculum Standards(Revised 2017 Edition 2020)states that subject core literacy is the embodiment of the educational value of physical education,which is a correct value,essential character and key competencies that are gradually developed in the process of teaching physical education.In order to equip students with core literacy,teachers need not only to be familiar with the development of core literacy themselves,but also to have the appropriate professional competence.The study used literature,interviews,questionnaires,mathematical statistics and logical analysis to compile a research questionnaire on the professional competencies of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an,and to investigate the professional competencies of some high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an in six areas:teaching design,teaching implementation,classroom management and educational activities,educational and teaching evaluation,communication and cooperation,and reflection and development.The study aims to grasp the extent to which high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an are aware of the core literacy of physical education,analyse the current situation of the professional competence of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an,explore the relationship between the core literacy of physical education and the professional competence of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an,analyse the problems and factors affecting the professional competence of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an,and propose strategies and suggestions for high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an to improve their professional competence.The aim is to propose strategies and suggestions for the improvement of professional competence of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an.The main findings of the study are as follows.The current situation of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an: Demographic statistics: the gender of high school physical education teachers is relatively unbalanced;in terms of profession,most teachers are related to physical education;in terms of education,more high-level talents need to be introduced;the teaching age structure is relatively balanced and can meet the daily teaching needs of high schools in urban areas of Xi’an.Awareness of core literacy in physical education:The mean value of the overall awareness of core literacy in physical education among high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an ranges from 3.05 to3.32.The highest level of cognition was in the form of motor cognition and skills and tactics and health knowledge mastery and application,with a score of 3.32;the lower scoring performance was in the form of physical fitness status and emotional regulation,with a score of 3.17.Professional competencies: From an overall perspective,the professional competencies of urban high school physical education teachers are of medium value,with "teaching design","teaching implementation",and "reflection and development" receiving higher importance than the other competencies.The other competencies were given a higher priority.The analysis of the differences in the professional competencies of senior secondary PE teachers showed that there were significant differences between the professional competencies of senior secondary PE teachers with master’s and doctoral degrees and those of senior secondary PE teachers with bachelor’s degrees,and that the professional competencies of PE teachers gradually increased as their academic qualifications increased.In the survey on the professional competence of senior secondary PE teachers with different teaching experience,there was a significant difference between the professional competence of senior secondary PE teachers with "less than 10 years" and "10-20 years and more than 20 years",with 10 years of teaching experience as the variation period.There was a significant difference in the professional competencies of senior secondary PE teachers by title,with the beginning of the change in the professional competencies of senior secondary PE teachers at the ’Secondary I’ level being significant.High school PE teachers who had received core literacy training,participated in workshops,and had incentives in their schools were significantly more competent.In the analysis of the correlation between the professional competence of high school PE teachers and the degree of awareness of core literacy in PE: the Pearson correlation coefficients for all three main aspects were significant and all were positive.The coefficient of correlation between the degree of awareness of PE core literacy and the professional competence of PE teachers was greater than 0.6,and there was a strong correlation.This indicates that there is a positive relationship between in-depth knowledge and understanding of the core literacy of physical education and the professional competence of high school physical education teachers.The factors affecting the professional competence of high school physical education teachers in urban areas of Xi’an are mainly focused on the school as well as individual level.The main influencing factors: At the school level,they mainly focus on: lack of support and leadership;no communication platform;and PE teachers are not valued.At the individual teacher level,the main factors are: traditional teaching concepts;weak awareness of self-development;and the inability to integrate the subject core literacy in teaching.Suggestions and strategies: At the school level,it is suggested that: teachers should be led to improve their professional capacity and to optimise the reward and punishment mechanism;schools should respond positively to the government’s call to build communication and digital platforms and give them more time and space;resources should be allocated reasonably and the policy on the college entrance examination should be implemented seriously to avoid the gradual marginalisation of PE teachers.Recommendations at the teacher level: actively change the concept of teaching and keep abreast of the times;take the initiative to improve the willingness and attitude of development and improve self-reflection;continue to study the core elements of physical education in depth,forming a situation where "the old lead the new and the new promote the old" and complement each other’s strengths. |
