In 2011,the concept of “whole book reading” was first appeared in the Compulsory Education Chinese Curriculum Standard(2011 Edition).With the deepening of the new curriculum reform,“reading more books,reading good books,reading whole books,developing reading habits,and accumulating reading experience” was established as a new requirement.It is vital to improve students’ core literacy in Chinese subjects by increasing readings,enriching reading experiences,enhancing reading skills,and developing reading habits.In addition,“whole book reading and discussion”,listed in both compulsory course and optional course,was ranked first among learning tasks in the Ordinary High School Chinese Curriculum Standard(2017 Edition)which presents opportunities and challenges to teach whole book reading.Rickshaw Boy,one of 12 compulsory books in junior high school,exhibits high values in literature,culture and education.The targets of research on reading teaching of the whole book of Rickshaw Boy were to solve problems in teaching process,improve teaching effects,and realize the commands of curriculum standards.Firstly,the thesis reviewed the history of “whole book reading” according to publications to date(chapter 1).The related concepts of “research on reading teaching of the whole book of Rickshaw Boy” was defined in chapter 2.It also elaborated the theoretical basis and significances of the research.Secondly,the current situation of reading teaching of the whole book of Rickshaw Boy was investigate by a survey to teachers and students from three local junior high schools(chapter 3).The results were analyzed by statistical software and were established in diagrams.It showed that students had a lot problems in whole book reading such as no interesting,no reading time,no reading methods and strategies.In addition,teachers met the challenges in teaching experience,teaching cases and teaching strategies.Finally,the teaching outline and teaching plan were designed based on the survey results and classroom cases.Chapter 4 focused on how to teaching whole book reading of Rickshaw Boy from teaching targets,teaching methods and strategies,teaching preparation and conduction,respectively.Chapter 5 introduced guidance class,advanced class and sharing class and documented in detail.Guidance class focused on stimulating interests,teaching reading methods and strategies,and making reading plans.Advanced class helped students reading deeply by task-driven and topic-driven strategies.Students could exchange ideas in sharing class.Chapter 6 gathered feedbacks from students and evaluated the class from three aspects such as teaching design,teaching process and teaching effect.The thesis concentrated on reading teaching of the whole book of Rickshaw Boy,including the theoretical explanation of “what”,the practical reflection of “why”,and the countermeasures and suggestions of “how”.It can not only enrich the theory of whole book reading,but also provide a teaching case for teachers.Indeed,it is benefit to motivating student’s interesting,improving their reading ability and cultivating reading habit.
