At present, objectified information is everywhere, and college students are deeply influenced by it.Previous studies have proved that self-objectification can cause significant negative effects on individuals.Searching for the protective factors between them has become an important part of the self-objectification research.Self-acceptance has always been regarded as an important protective factor of individual mental health. What role it plays in the relationship between self-objectification and mental health becomes the starting point of this study.A questionnaire survey was conducted on 1200 college students to explore the relationship between self-objectification and mental health of college students,as well as the role of self-acceptance in the relationship. The results showed that:(1)Self-objectification could positively predict the detection of mental health problems(b=1.652,△R~2=0.114,p<0.001),and self-objectification had a significant positive predictive effect on all symptom dimension factors.(2)Self-acceptance has a moderating effect on the relationship between self-objectification and mental health of college students.Specifically, compared with individuals with high level of self-acceptance,self-objectification is more likely to have a negative impact on the mental health of individuals with low level of self-acceptance.On the basis of the first study, the second study designs a self-acceptance intervention scheme for groups with self-objectification tendency, enriching the self-acceptance intervention research of college students and providing new ideas for alleviating the negative effects of self-objectification of college students.40 recruited individuals with self-objectifying tendency were randomly divided into intervention group and control group. The intervention group received group intervention, and the control group learned the tasks unrelated to the intervention content at the same time. The self-acceptance and mental health of the two groups were measured before and after the intervention and during follow-up.The results showed that the differences of the two variables in the two groups were not significant in the pre-test,but significant in the post-intervention test and significant in the follow-up test. The differences between the two variables were significant in the intervention group, but not in the control group. The differences of the two variables in the pre-test and follow-up test were significant in the intervention group, but not in the control group. There was no significant difference between the two variables in the intervention group.Specifically, after the intervention, the level of self-acceptance increased and the detection of mental health problems decreased.Conclusion:Self-objectification has negative effects on college students’ mental health, and self-acceptance can regulate the relationship between the two effects. The self-acceptance group intervention program designed for self-objectified individuals in this study can effectively improve the level of self-acceptance and mental health of such individuals, and the effect is sustainable. To pay attention to the physical and mental influence of self-objectification on college students and explore effective ways to improve the physical and mental health of self-objectification individuals is an important idea to continue to study self-objectification.
