The improvement of students’ problem-solving ability is the goal that mathematics teachers have been dedicated to for many years.By setting a series of tests about number sequence, this article aims to study the current situation of senior three students in problem-solving ability. The issues studied in this article include:(1)The overall level of senior three students in solving number sequence questions.(2)The performance in solving number sequence questions of senior three students when it comes to different ability elements.(3)Whether the ability in solving number sequence questions has certain differences between different class types.(4)Whether the ability in solving number sequence questions has certain differences between different genders. This article focus on the abilities in reading comprehension, constructing mathematical model, problem solving and presentation, and self-summarizing and introspection.By means of questionnaire,76 students were tested, including 23 in superior classes(9 males and 14 females),53 in ordinary classes(27 males and 26females),the findings are as follows:(1)On a scale of 180,the average score of the ability in solving number sequence questions of these students is about 87,and about 30% of these students passed;(2)In the process of solving number sequence questions, the level of the four ability elements decreased in the order of reading comprehension, constructing mathematical model, and problem solving and presentation.Generally speaking, students performed relatively well in terms of simple questions, however, the ability to solve complex questions needs to be improved. As for self-summarize and introspection ability, the overall performance was unsatisfactory and needs to be improved;(3)There was a significant difference between superior class students and ordinary class students in problem solving ability, with the former outperforming the latter.(4)There was a significant difference in the number sequence problem solving ability, with females outperforming males.
