It is necessary to promote self-management skills among students.Therefore,contemporary school education should empower students to develop into self-directed learners so that they can manage themselves in a constantly changing world.To this end,a case study has been conducted with M junior middle class students in K School by referring to the success of theme class meetings in China and ASK(Attitude,Skill and Knowledge)interdisciplinary competences model(thereafter“ASK Model”)as a framework of reference in order to curate a curricula for theme class meetings that are uniquely suited for Malaysian Chinese Independent Schools.This thesis also aims to provide a point of reference for the Chinese Independent School communities to promote the efficacy of using theme class meetings to cultivate self-management skills among them.This thesis applies the action research model to achieve two-prong objectives through involvement of students in deciding the themes and implementation of class meetings.On one hand,theme class meetings aim to imparts pedagogical thoughts with pedagogical curriculum relating to self-management to empower students to face wide ranging issues.On the other hand,students will also accumulate experiences in developing self-management skills through relentless practice.Revolving around the ASK model,students and teachers design curricula for theme class meetings and implement it based on real life issues.Consequently,involved parties will develop competences on active inquiry,problem-solving,design thinking,collaboration with others and other related skills,which form part of the four dimensions of self-management skills,namely learning,time,emotion,and interpersonal relationship.This study concludes that theme class meetings can improve students’ self-management skills,self-confidence and interests,the courage and capabilities in effective self-expression,self-reflection,and resulting in stronger moral values.It can also positively contribute to class unity.Furthermore,it enlightens the teaching profession.This study also creates an effective framework and methods on developing students’ self-management skills through theme class meetings for the reference of the school administrators and homeroom teachers,so that more classes or other Chinese Independent Schools will promote the use of theme class meetings to cultivate students’ self-development skills and ultimately,to reform the education system and framework. |
