In recent years,international competition has become increasingly fierce,and in order to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,it is imperative to comprehensively improve the scientific literacy of the nation.Cultivating students’ scientific literacy is an important function and necessary requirement of school education,and biology as science education is an important vehicle for cultivating students’ scientific literacy,and homework is an important vehicle for implementing the development of scientific literacy.In this context,exploring how to implement students’ scientific literacy through biology homework has become a hot issue of current research.The study used literature,survey,action research and other relevant pedagogical theoretical methods to conduct a practical exploration of open-ended assignments in biology to enhance students’ scientific literacy in rural junior high schools.The results of the study showed that:(1)Most students in Middle School M are not interested in science and technology of biology,some students have poor scientific ability,are not good at active thinking and hands-on problem solving,and have not formed a complete rational thinking ability;students have a single scientific method,and lack of innovative consciousness and ability;some students have weak scientific consciousness,and lack the scientific quality of exploring the unknown world and daring to experiment;the overall level of students’ scientific literacy is not high.Most students are more willing to complete open assignments,especially those that are novel,unique and interesting.(2)Open source of homework content: The content of open homework can come from the observation and reflection part of the textbook,quiz questions,life problems,subjective questions on teaching materials,or interdisciplinary content.Open form of assignments: open assignments can be in the form of information,inquiry,hands-on,biology games or viewing and reading.Open feedback: For different types of assignments,students can give feedback in the form of mini-essays,investigation reports,handwritten reports,process pictures,group reports,mind maps,physical models,and impromptu speeches in class.Homework evaluation is open: when evaluating homework,the subjects of homework evaluation should include teachers and students;the evaluation should include the attitude,quality,time and creativity of completing homework,etc.(3)Open assignments in junior high school biology can significantly enhance students’ interest in learning biology,cultivate students’ thinking,hands-on and creative abilities,and effectively improve students’ scientific knowledge,scientific method,scientific ability,scientific quality and scientific awareness.
