Self-injury is the behavior that an individual intentionally and repeatedly harms his own body tissue without suicidal intention, and it is a high risk predictor of suicidal behavior.Self-injury happens a lot in teenagers, therefore, how to reduce the self-injury behavior of adolescents, and promote the physical and mental development of adolescents is very important.Physical exercise is a part of our lives,it may affect the individual’s coping style, further affect self-injury behavior. This paper mainly focuses on the relationship between physical exercise and self-injury behavior of middle school students and the mechanisms involved. In this study,634 middle school students from a middle school in Jiaozuo city were followed up for half a year through the physical exercise rating scale, coping style scale of middle school students and youth self-injury questionnaire. To look at the current state of physical exercise and self-injury among middle school pupils, and to investigate the relationship between physical exercise and self-injury and its mechanism by constructing a longitudinal mediation model among physical exercise, coping style and self-injury.The results show:(1)The junior middle school students’ physical exercise amount was at the low level, the rate of self-injury behavior in junior middle school students was more than 30%,The amount of exercise performed by men was much higher than that of women; There were gender differences in negative coping styles, with girls having a higher negative coping style than boys.In terms of positive coping styles and self-injury,there were no gender differences.(2)Physical exercise, positive coping style and self-injury behavior were significantly correlated in the same time dimension,Physical exercise, positive coping style and self-injury behavior were also significantly correlated in different time dimensions; There was no correlation between physical exercise and negative coping style. The correlation between the negative coping style and self-injury was significant.(3)Physical exercise can predict the positive coping style longitudinally, and the positive coping style can predict self-injury longitudinally;(4)Positive coping styles played a mediating role in the relationship between physical exercise and self-injury.Physical exercise can not only affect self-injury through the horizontal mediating effect of positive coping style, but also exert an impact on self-injury through the vertical mediating effect of positive coping style. Conclusion:Physical exercise, positive coping style and self-injury behavior are very related, physical exercise and negative coping style are not related, negative coping style and self-injury behavior are also related.Physical exercise can predict positive coping style vertically, and positive coping style can predict self-injury vertically.Positive coping styles played a mediating role in the relationship between physical exercise and self-injury.Physical exercise can directly or indirectly affect self-injury through positive coping styles.Educational implications:According to the characteristics of physical exercise, active coping style and self-injury behavior of junior middle school students,we propose the following education strategies to improve middle school students self-injury behavior: First, from the perspective of school education, the positive impact of physical exercise on middle school students’ physical and mental health should be emphasized and students should be guided to correctly understand physical exercise.schools and families should ensure the effective implementation of physical exercise.Secondly, schools and families should respond positively and work together to actively guide students,to pay attention to the student’s coping style and encourage them to use more positive coping styles. Finally, schools and families combine physical exercise, coping styles and other factors to reduce the occurrence of self-injury behavior, and pay attention to the mental health development of junior high school students.
