Rural Transformation And Urban-Rural Spatial Integration

Rural transformation and urban and rural spatial integration is a realistic research project for Chinese regional development in the context of rapid urbanization. The process of "New South Jiangsu Mode" from "South Jiangsu Mode" is the evolving process of rural transformation and urban&rural spatial relationship, which is typically significant in Chinese rapid urbanization. The thesis explores the process, characteristics and mechanism of rural area transformation, and the problems of traditional urban and rural spatial reconstruction in theory and practice, which provides scientific decision making and theoretical support. The thesis consists of three parts.Part I is literature review of rural geography and changes in rural community and urban&rural relationship and urban&rural spatial planning at home and abroad, which provides research reference and theory and methods.Part II analyzes the process of rural transformation, spatial characteristics and motive mechanism in the changes in South Jiangsu rural development mode, and presents the law of rural development and urban&rural spatial development in South Jiangsu since reform, i.e. change from rural development characterized with village and town-oriented decentralization to urban and rural development characterized with city-oriented spatial centralization, and gradually to the regional development of urban& rural interaction and spatial integration.This thesis redefines the connotation of "South Jiangsu Mode" and "New South Jiangsu Mode" in terms of geography, and discusses their developing drive and spatial characteristics, and presents the process and spatial features and formation mechanism of rural industrialization in South Jiangsu with "South Jiangsu Mode". From late in 1970s to the middle of 1990s, South Jiangsu rural industrialization restructures its traditional rural regional structure and basically achieves non-agricultural transformation of rural economy and population and promotes revival and prosperity of the small towns. This process is characterized with decentralization and Equalization in space, and formation mechanism of village and town-oriented inner development since the middle of 1990s, rural developing mode has changed from "South Jiangsu Mode" to "New South Jiangsu Mode", which is caused by globalization and marketization and regionalization. During the process, city plays a leading role in the regional development and leads to change of direction of rural developing structure------from inner-oriented to open-oriented, and change in rural spatial developing structure------from decentralization to centralization, urban and rural development has a tendency to economic and social and spatial integration------the transformation of South Jiangsu urban and rural developing integration.With the further urban and rural transformation, urban and rural space will be fully integrated, and dualistic developing mode will give rise to the problems of urban and rural spatial structure. Further urban and rural spatial integration will be restrained by backward urbanization. Spatial structure brought by city deviated development is increasingly evident. Development conflicts with environment.Part III is addressed to rural transformation in South Jiangsu and its trend and target mode of urban&rural spatial evolvement, and presents major strategies of urban and rural spatial integration. With an analysis of the process of urban and rural transformation and current situation,the thesis puts forward spatial developing ideal and target mode------urban and rural spatialintegration. Future urban and rural spatial development and objective mode in South Jiangsu is the following: with the center of big and medium city group, taking grouped towns' development as bond, with new rural community of farmers' settlement as main body, connecting vast countryside, integrating urban society and rural society to form a system of urban and rural spatial integration. The thesis holds urban and rural spatial restructuring is the choice of urban and rural spatial integration, overall urban and rural planning is the main means to promote urban and rural spatial integration, and system innovation is the guarantee of urban and rural spatial integration. And it presents major strategies: restructuring metropolitan areas; building spatial growth pole of urban and rural spatial integration and promoting integration got rural area into urban system; restructuring traditional agriculture and change it to urban agriculture.The innovation in the thesis is in the three aspects: first, with the background of change in South Jiangsu rural transformation, the thesis systematically discusses two processes of rural transformation in South Jiangsu since reform, and analyzes its spatial characteristics and mechanism, which geographically provides a research approach to rural development; second, geographically the thesis redefines the connotation of "South Jiangsu Mode" and "New South Jiangsu Mode" and presents their developing drive and spatial features; third, it designs an ideal and target mode for South Jiangsu rural development and urban and rural spatial relationship, and presents the development route to urban and rural spatial integration.However, rural transformation is a project involved with multiple disciplines. The thesis only explores rural transformation in terms of rural economic structure and urban & rual spatial structure, which has some limitation. It needs further study as for social structure transformation and eco-environment structure.Meanwhile, qualitative analysis is mainly employed in the study of driving mechanism of rural transformation, which needs more accountability analysis and model analysis. Urban and rural spatial integration is a description of spatial state, the components of its spatial mechanism needs further study.
