The current development status and trend of grenade launcher both domestic and overseas were analyzed. Based on the reference to a similar handheld grenade launcher from foreign country, a high performance grenade firing 25×40mm small caliber grenade was designed. Firstly, the overall scheme design of the handheld grenade launcher was conducted, and its operation mode, recoil motion, ejection, counter-recoil, feed action, etc, were studied also. The 3D solid model of the grenade launcher was established. Based on the multi-body dynamics, with the combination of the practical operation situation, the established 3D model was imported into ADAMS after necessary simplified process, by which the multi-body dynamics model of the grenade launcher was obtained. The kinematics and dynamics analyses of automat, feed mechanism, trigger mechanism, and ejection mechanism, were carried out, and the movement reliability of the mechanisms was validated. The velocity, displacement and the load of the key and important parts during firing were determined. Based on the export data from ADAMS, the FEM models of suitably simplified key and important parts were established in ANSYS by FEM principle. By the FEM analyses of the models, the stresses of the key and important parts during operation were obtained. According to the strength theory, it was checked whether the structure strength was satisfied or not. Based on the obtained stress and its distribution, some parts were optimized. The obtained results of this paper provided design basis for the further researches of the individual handheld grenade launcher, and the research method supplied better reference thinking and measures for related studies.
