The territory of our country is broad and the topographical features are complicated. Many historic towns and villages lie in the surround of mountains, where the traditional settlement is growing up with special features under the influence of nature and special mode of life, then the various spatial form of traditional mountainous settlement come into being. The sociculture considers that a kind of culture is existing more long, its character is more outstanding and its trend of value is more clear and definite also. The mountainous historic towns and villages have their special territorial culture. They reflect the natural ecologic system and the social culture. The theory of pattern language by Christopher Alexander mainly expounds a kind of design method, a principle of design. By analyzing the mountainous historic towns and villages, we find out there are many pattern including in them, then we apply the design method of pattern language to conserve the historic towns and villages. The method can help us combine the work of conservation with the question of development, so the traditional and local features can be persisted, the social need in today can also be satisfied. This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is exordium mainly elucidating the purpose and significance of this study, the research actuality in this field, as well as the background of historic towns and villages. The second chapter briefly analyzes the theory of pattern language and applies the method of pattern language to conceive the conservation planning of historic towns and villages. The three chapter mainly analyzes the traditional pattern of mountainous historic towns and villages. The four chapter emphasizes the need pattern in today. The five chapter combines the traditional pattern with the need pattern in today, and then expounds a new method of conservation planning. The last chapter make the Dayuwan village in Huangpi country, Hubei province for example in order to probe the conceivability of conservation planning which is based on the pattern language.
