With the continuous development of power system and expansion of power grid, kinds of applications of automation system appear constantly, and the problem of how to realize the exchange data compatible among different power systems or the different applications of power system become research focus. Combination of power grid model is an important application of energy management system (EMS).Power system model combination is to creat network model connection among different system dispatching regions. By defining parameters of power system components and the connection of components in database, network model provides power grid structure and parameters for power network analysis. Power system are not isolated, they are connected to each other. In the whole network, the network in the system dispatching region which we are interest in is called internal network, and the rest parts are external network which influence internal network by boundary equipments. In network analysis, we usually combine multiple regional network models to form larger network model, or have to obtain external network data, such as the network structure and measurements, to improve internal network calculation accuracy. Model combination problems, such as how to extract information of power network model, how to combine adjacent region model, and so on, are worth studying.Common information model (CIM) is one important part of IEC61970 series standard, which is an abstract model that represents all the major objects in an electric utility enterprise typically contained in an EMS information model. By providing a standard way of representing power system resources as object classes and attributes, along with their relationships, the CIM make applications access to power dispatch system and facilitates integration of other information system.Starting from CIM model, this paper introduces IEC61970 series standards, learns CIM specification of power system, including the packages of CIM, the classes of CIM and its relationship, CIM modeling method, analyzes data carrier of network information. The paper also proposes a realization of power system model combination based on CIM, which is a part of CIM/XML subject supported by Integrated Electronics Co. Ltd. The model combination system is divided into two modules, CIM model import function module and model combination function module. Each module has its own sub-modules, all of which achieve the common function of the system. According to the test, the model combination method proposed in this paper could meet offline requirements of power network, and can be an expanded function of EMS.
