Translation, as a practical activity, has been playing an important role in the cultural communication of human being. However, as translators pay too much attention to translation practice and to some extent neglect the rational reflection and comprehensive study on theoretical construction of translation, translation study does not get the due attention what it deserves. With great social responsibility, Professor Xu Yuanchong devotes himself to the construction of systematic translation theory; on the basis of his years'engagement on translation practice and the theories of previous translation celebrities (such as Yanfu, Fulei and so on), Xu establishes his own system of Chinese literary translation theories---"art of beautifulization, creation the best as in rivalry". Xu's translation theories are built on his own translation experience, on one hand, Xu inherits the aesthetics conception and artistic pursuit of Chinese traditional translation thoughts and puts forward theory of beauty in three aspect and three resemblances theory and on the other hand, Xu also breaks the limitation of tradition and put forward"theory of rivalry"and"theory of three'shi'"creatively. To make a comprehensive study on Xu's translation thoughts will certainly make some contribution to the theoretical construction of Chinese translation study. This thesis is going to give a full elaboration and meticulous analysis of Xu's translation thoughts from an all-round perspective, introducing his translation theories in detail and giving a tentative evaluation on his translation practice and at the same time, drawing an objective and impartial judgment on controversies caused by his translation thoughts so as to provide a thinking space for the development of Chinese translation cause. In addition to introduction and conclusion, this thesis is intended to cover four chapters. In Chapter One, the author gives general information of Xu Yuanchong and introduces Xu's literary translation for over sixty years, including his translation practice in early stage, translation of ancient poems in middle stage and retranslation of classical works in mature stage. Then the author gives a brief introduction of the development of Xu's translation theories and analyzes the influence of Xu's personality on his theory so as to give readers a comprehensive understanding of Xu Yuanchong. In Chapter Two, Xu's translation theories are presented in details. Xu establishes his own system of translation theories with references to translation theories of others and his translation practice. This chapter is going to elaborate Xu's translation theories in different stages from the perspective of ontology, epistemology, methodology and teleology so as to give readers a comprehensive understanding of Xu's translation theory system. In Chapter Three, the author mainly reexamines Xu's translation thoughts. Deriving from the comprehension of Xu himself and Xu's translation theory system, the author summarizes the characteristics, breakthroughs and limitation of Xu's translation thoughts; at the same time, function and influence of Xu's translation thoughts are also discussed. In Chapter Four, the author is going to discuss the controversies caused by Xu's translation theories, including dispute between verse for verse translation and verse for prose translation, dispute between foreignization and domestication, dispute on rivalry; influence of these discussions on the development of Chinese traditional theory is also expounded. At last, a brief conclusion presents a clear summary of what has been discussed in this thesis. In the end, the author acknowledges Xu's great contribution to the establishment of Chinese systematic translation theory and regards Xu as a master of Chinese translation theories.
