Kuomintang is the biggest opposition party in contemporary Taiwan's political arena. It is also a party that persists in recognizing the"1992 Agreement"and resisting"Taiwan independence". It has an important influence on and plays a crucial role in promoting the cross-strait relations, giving an impetus to the peace and development between the two straits and carrying forward the process of the motherland's unification. Ma Yingjiu is the leader of the middle-aged politicians and the most influential and the most popular political genius of Kuomintang. He has been appointed as the"presidential candidate"to run for the top post of Taiwan district in 2008"General election"on behalf of Kuomintang. His mainland policies not only stand for his own judgements on the cross-strait relations, but also reflect Kuomintang's policies and standing positions on this issue including the motherland's unification. Therefore, the author will take the methods of historical study, realistic study, comparative study and case study to analyze and assess Ma Yingjiu's mainland policies. He hopes this dissertation can do some good to the studies on Ma Yingjiu's mainland policies in the academic circle and provide some references to precisely study and judge the developmental trend of the future cross-strait relations. This dissertation is composed of three chapters as its main body with the beginning of an introduction .In the introductory part, Taiwan issue's importance to the most essential national interest of China, the complexity, the current state and the main targets of handling the contemporary Taiwan issue will be described respectively. At the same time, kuomintang's important role in the process of the development of the cross-strait relations, Ma Yingjiu's position inside Kuomintang and the importantly realistic meaning of analyzing and assessing his mainland policies will be simply mentioned, too.In the first chapter, the author will introduce the basic structure of Ma Yingjiu's mainland policies, including his recognization of"1992 Agreement", his position of adhering to the"one China"principle, his general designs on the questions about Taiwan's future, his main ideas on the cross-strait relations, his reactions and solutions to the ideology of Taiwanese identification and the original means taken by Taiwan to solve the problems of international recognization. In the second chapter, the author will analyze the important role of the family and educational backgrounds and the political experiences to the formation of Ma Yingjiu's mainland policies. Next, the influences from Chinese mainland, the United States of America and the variations of the internal political environment of Taiwan will be analyzed step by step.In the third chapter, the author will assess the influences from Ma Yingjiu's mainland policies on the cross-strait relations. At first, the positive side of his policies will be assessed. This means that his position of"anti-Taiwan independence"is helpful to maintain peace and stability between Taiwan Straits, his recognization of"1992 Agreement"enables the cross-straits relations to break its political bottle-neck to realize the objectives of stable development, his adherence to pursue China's future unification is beneficial to the great cause of the motherland's unification, his objections of"abolishing Chinese culture in Taiwan"are useful to lead the public opinions to go a right way and his ideas of supporting"three throughs"and direct sailing are available to promote the economic cooperation between the two straits to develop into a higher level. As the next step, the negative effects of his mainland policies will be assessed. They refer to the following: the ambiguities and changeable positions reflecting from his mainland policies will bury a hidden bomb to the future cross-strait relations; his extra emphasis on the identification of"the Republic of China"does harm to the possible breakthrough from the cross-strait relations and the future negotiations between the two straits; his neutral postions on the mainland issues will bring uncertainties to the promotions of the cross-strait relations. The conclusive part is the summary to the whole dissertation.
