As China is a big agricultural country and the number of peasants accounts for a great majority of the whole population, peasant problem has been the heart of the matter of China that has to be solved not only during the course of revolution and construction in the 20th century but also during the course of constructing a well-off society in an all-round way and realizing the objectives of modernization in the 21st century. Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant are at once extensive, profound and systematic and play a critical and decisive role in the whole system of his thoughts. During the great revolutionary and constructive practice, Mao Zedong regarded the solution of the peasant problem as a breakthrough to the revolution and constrction of China and thus laid the solid foundation for the combination of Marxism and the reality of China to achieve the first historical leap forward.For the solution of the existing problem of agriculture, countryside and peasant, the construction of a well-off and harmonious society in an all-round way and the enhancement of reform and opening to the outside policy and socialist modernization of China, it is of profound historical and realistic significance to carry out a research into Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant, to explore the tracks of Mao's thought in discovering and solving the peasant problem and to summarize the historical experiences accumulated by Mao Zedong as well as the CPC in pursuing solutions to the peasant problem.Adopting dialectic materialist and historic materialist standpoint, perspective and approach and taking the process of China's New Democratic Revolution, Socialist Revolution and Socialist construction and modernization as the major historical bachground, the present paper explores the formation and development of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant from a historical point of view employing the combination of historical account and comments as well as comparison and contrast. It attends to the the elementary contents of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant systematically and analyses their overwhelming influence on Chinese revolution and construction from the combined perspective of history and reality. On the whole, the paper has made creative academic achievements .The whole paper deals with Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant in six parts. The first part, taking the modern semi-colonial and semi-feudal Chinese history and society as its background, explores the causes and conditions of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant from the perspectives of time requirments, social reality and personal factors. Part two deals with the appearance of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant and the major contents before 1927, with the history of the revolutionary movements led by the CPC immediately after it was founded and the national revolutionary movements as the major clue. With the history of land Revolution War and the Anti-Japanese War as the major clue, the third part explores the development, major contents and significance of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant problem between 1927 and 1945. Taking the Liberation War as the major historical backgroud, part four explores the further development, maturation and major contents of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant between 1946 and 1949. Based on the history of socialist revolution and construction after the foundation of the People's Republic of China, part five explores Mao Zedong's persistent efforts and pursuit concerning the solution of the peasant problem under the new historical conditions, his achievements as well as mistakes. As the study of history serves the reality, the sixth part explores the enrichment and perfection of Mao Zedong's viewpoints on peasant in contemporary China and analyses their inspirations to China's great cause of socialist constrction and modernization.
