Discipline, the basic union of a university, acts as the basis for its existence and development. The characteristics, competitive predominance, and academic reputation of a university are all exerted through its key disciplines. The favorable operation of the three functions of a university, namely the talent cultivation, competitive predominance, and social service should be realized through a discipline platform. This thesis introduces the Theory of the Core Competence that was popular in the 1990s in western management field, and discusses the concepts and connotations of disciplines, discipline constructions, the impulse of discipline development, and the competitive environment and predominance. With the analysis of the forms of discipline resources, core competence, and competitive predominance, this thesis carries out a deep and thorough research on the core competence in the unique unit of university key disciplines. It discusses the basic features of the core competence of the key disciplines in universities, and establishes a conceptual framework and analysis model, and constructs a evaluation index system for the core competence in key disciplines on the basis of figuring out the competitively predominant strategic factors in the subjective activity chain. Furthermore, a fuzzy evaluating method is applied to construct a comprehensive fuzzy evaluation model for discipline core competence. This is done to understand the connotation of the core competence in key disciplines. The evaluation may help each discipline be aware of the its advantages and disadvantages, and provide decisive orientations for the development of the key disciplines. It may also help to guide the strategic orientation, plan the order of cultivating and exploring various abilities, hence adjust the discipline resource allocation and management purposefully and maintain its predominance domestically or even globally.
