Discipline, the basic organizational and academic unit of a university, acts a foundational role in its existence and development.The three functions of a modern university, namely intelligence cultivation, academic research and social service, need to be actualized by the operation of disciplines;the characteristics, competitive predominance and academic reputation of a modern university also need to be visualized by the status of disciplines. "No superior standard of disciplines, no reputation for a university" best illustrates the core status and important function of disciplines in a university.As both of the exterior circumstance and interior condition changing, the progress of the discipline is confronted with a new period. And in this new period, the issue on how to maintain and upgrade the competitive predominance and developing potential of the discipline becomes the focus in the research on the discipline construction.Core competence theory is one of organization, popular in the western management and economics in 1990s. Core competence theory caters to directing and instructing the enterprises to face exterior competition and to achieve interior progress, which has been significantly proved by many enterprises.University discipline, existing as the basic organization in a university, equals to enterprises on some items. Due to the equality, core competence theory can be feasible and efficient in directing and instructing the practice of discipline construction.In this dissertation, core competence theory is applied into the issue of university discipline construction. According to this theory, this research discusses the connotation, characteristic and essential of the core competence of university discipline and analyses the disadvantages d shortcomings existing in the university discipline construction. Then, aiming at these disadvantages d shortcomings, this research puts forwards approaches and measures to upgrade the core competence of university discipline.
