In China, for a long time, one problem in teaching and learning English is that the gains are much fewer than the pains. A great number of people spend so much time learning English, but finally, most of them can't use it freely. To the Chinese students, they have some special difficulties in their English learning—the lack of language environment, the way English is taught, the influence of mother tongue. English learners learn English mostly from the textbooks to learn the limited grammar and structures. In daily life, they seldom use English to speak or write. As a result, the learning efficiency is not so great.The author of the paper thinks the way to improve English learning efficiency is try to use English. As teachers, we should do our best to train our students to improve their English level by using English.In order to examine whether it is possible to improve the writing ability by combining the training of speaking and writing, we carried out an experiment on 63 English learners from two English classes in Grade 2003 in the author's school. Class 1 is the experimental class, and Class 2 is the control class. During the period of the experiment, the author used the tests (pre-test and post -test), questionnaires, collection of samples to collect data and make relevant analysis.The experimental time lasts only half a year, one semester, but the result is obvious. After the experiment, the data show that not only the students'speaking and writing skills have been improved but their confidences and interest have been elicited. Their feedback is that it is effective to combine speaking and writing together in order to improve their English writing levels. So a conclusion is drawn from the experiment: combining the training of the two skills together is a possible and positive approach to promoting writing.In English learning, both speaking and writing belong to productive skills. The process of practicing speaking and writing is actually the one of improving the productive skills, and it is also the direct way of reflecting how the students can produce the language, whether they can pass messages correctly, and how strong their communicative abilities are. Speaking and writing can show the students'ability of applying the language objectively from many aspects. However, in the traditional teaching, the teachers didn't pay adequate attention to the training of the two skills. As a result, the students'speaking ability is poor and their writing ability is worse. So, in the experiment, the author regarded the combination of the two as the breakthrough point to practice. It made the students do strong spadework for writing while practicing speaking. Therefore they can achieve the aim of improving their writing. And after some time of practicing speaking and writing, the structures they've learned can also be strengthened, including tenses, voices, sentence patterns, words, phrases and so on.
