English curriculum resources may be defined as all the available resources in the course of implementing English curriculum. The development of English curriculum resources means the practice to discover, create, process and internalize all the resources beneficial to teaching and realize their educational value. This study is to research the status quo of English curriculum resources in rural middle schools and probe into the countermeasures. That will enrich existing studies on English curriculum resources and provide references for the development of secondary English education in rural areas and for the following academic research.This study selected two junior high schools and two senior high schools in Yantai City and Liaocheng City respectively. 240 teachers questionnaires were distributed among all English teachers in the high schools and 168 valid questionnaires were received. 420 students questionnaires were distributed among all grades and 332 valid questionnaires were received. This study mainly analyzed the teachers questionnaires, and the students questionnaires are used for experimental verification. The final conclusion was reached by the statistical data on the questionnaires and focused interviews:I. The development and utilization of English curriculum resources is rude and inefficient. Textbooks and reference books are mainly used.II. Rural middle schools don't encourage and support English curriculum resources building sufficiently. Overall, the English teaching equipment and related books are inadequate, and their using frequency is low.III. The teachers'ability to develop and utilize English curriculum resources should be improved a lot. The English teachers are more familiar with the concept of curriculum resources, but the traditional curriculum resources are mainly recognized. The English teachers have been aware of the insufficiency of English curriculum resources and the necessity of their development and utilization, but there is not active participation because the teachers are working under great pressure and their time and energy is limited. Current English teaching is still examination-oriented, uses mainly oral teaching method, emphasizes the teachers'authority, and short of genuine equality of exchanges. It also lacks specialized training for the English teachers in rural middle schools. Teaching communication between teachers is not regular. In general, teachers generative curriculum resources are weak.IV. English teaching in rural middle schools failed to fully inspire the students'enthusiasm. There is still passive learning. In general, students generative curriculum resources are wasted.After the survey, we can find out the main problems in the development and utilization of English curriculum resources in rural middle schools: a. The development and utilization of English curriculum resources is rude and inefficient; b. The school curriculum resources building is not balanced; c. The building of English curriculum resources support system is feeble; d. The teachers'ability to develop and utilize English curriculum resources is low; e. The students'awareness of curriculum resources is weak. This study puts forward the following suggestions:I. Rural middle schools should establish English curriculum resources database of various levels and long-term cooperation and exchange mechanism and professional development mechanism in order to construct the regional curriculum resources in a broader sense.II. Rural middle schools should encourage and promote the development and utilization of English curriculum resources, improve the human and material resources and actively push forward the building of the school curriculum resources.III. English teachers in rural middle schools should improve their ability to develop and utilize English curriculum resources, expand the teaching space, actively participate in the educational reform, and promote the building of the teachers curriculum resources.IV. English teaching should exert the main role of students through teachers'playing a leading role. Evaluation system for students should be reformed in order to promote active participation of students and actively push forward the building of students curriculum resources. Through this study, the author has a better understanding of development and utilization of English curriculum resources in rural middle schools. The necessity of developing and utilize English curriculum resources and the relative lag of the status quo are indisputable. We should actively explore the effective ways to build English curriculum resources and promote effective English teaching in order to effectively improve the quality of teaching English in rural middle schools. Those are our responsibilities. The author will continue to pay attention to the related research.
