The excessive development of industrial civilization has deteriorated the global environmental situation, and also, it aggravated the crisis of the relationship between human and nature, and caused the tension of the internal relationship between human beings. The idea of sustainable development finds a new way of sound development both for the nature and for human kind .At the same time, achieving sustainable development in all-round fields like society, economy and environment will surely send human on the path towards ecologic civilization. Human is the core of sustainable development. As an effective way of increasing people's knowledge and ability related to sustainability, education nowadays is gaining more and more attention in the international society.With the putting forward of UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which accompanied by the official issue of International Implementation scheme, countries all over the world have begun to take actions, in Britain and other countries, education for sustainable development has been taken as required curriculum in primary schools and middle schools universally. Having a population of more than one billion, the issue of sustainable development for China is really urgent,we must carry out education for sustainable development in primary schools and middle schools all over the country with endless effort. As the youth and childhood is the crucial life period of one's development, we should pay enough attention to such kind of education in this period ,thus to make education for sustainable development(ESD) in both primary school and middle school assuming necessary duties and playing the pioneering role in the process of our country's implementing sustainable development strategy .The mainbody of this thesis includes three parts. Part I is mainly about theoretical discussion, which elaborates concerned conceptions of ESD, introduced the origin, reviews the historical evolution process , describes core subjects of ESD in certain countries and regions , and also compares practice trend for ESD in different countries. Part II focuses on the current situation and adjustment of ESD in China's primary and middle school. Related survey indicates that, although China's school ESD has made certain improvement, many problems still block the furthering of China's ESD, among them are: concerned policies with ESD have not been carried out effectively, teacher training is lagging behind, the textbooks and teaching methods for ESD do not meet the requirements for prompting ESD in primary school and middle school, and nowadays, ESD in China doesn't pay sufficient attention to the students'sustainable development etc. Such problems were discussed in this part.Considering the present situation of ESD in China's primary and middle school, much work has to be done in order to achieve solid advancement in ESD, which includes furthering the implementation of concerned policies, putting forward the job of teacher training, actively prompting the transformation of textbooks and teaching methods, also students'abilities for sustainable development should be highlighted in the process of ESD and the practical links of school ESD should be greatly strengthened. If these changes can be made, then ESD in China will go on smoothly and fulfill its responsibility in the process of China's carrying out its strategies for sustainable development with endless effort.
