As an important part of the social structure, community occupies a very importantposition in the social structure of China now. China’s social structure is experiencingthe transformation from the "national unification" to "State, markets, community-way". From the social angle, the previous district administration is transforming to thesystem of housing estate, which is moving toward the goal of community. From theangle of participant, the residents are becoming the owners with consciousness ofright who express the willing to be citizens.Community,as a concept that was studied in the west earlier, is a socialcommunity that is composed of people inhabited in a certain geographical area.Society is made up of various sizes of communities. Research on community is thestarting point for social studies to some extent. A mature community has a lot offunctions. Even the government dysfunctions, the community can still operate, andmaintain rules. Mature community will save a lot of administrative costs for thegovernment, and be able to supply government welfare. China, as a country with alarge population which is confronting with the critical period of reform, graduallyhighlights various social problems, such as aging population, limited medicalresources and so on. If these problems are still undertaken by government, then notonly the government would be overwhelmed, but also the needs of people cannot bemet. In this thesis, on the basis of the concept and connotation of communityautonomy, the author analyzes the current situation of community autonomy throughpresenting the western and domestic community studies. Through communityautonomy survey, the thesis exposes the community residents’ autonomy problems. Atthe meantime, combined with case studies of Shanghai Wujie, the author shows thedeep causes underlying the problems of community autonomy. The author analyzesthe four mobilizations existing in community today, and then discusses thegovernment-led multipartite cooperation model for community organizations. At last, the author is willing to make a revelation to the Chinese community autonomy.
