An Empirical Research On The Influence Of Technological Innovation On Zhejiang Manufacturing Export Competitiveness

Since the opening reform, manufacturing industry in Zhejiang has acquired a quick development and extended its export scale with its own advantage and the opportunity of the global manufacturing center transfer. But because of the processing trade and low cost labor-intensived products of manufacturing industry in Zhejiang, the products exported have low technique and add-value, which leads to a large number of anti-dumping and Technical Barriers to Trade. At the same time, The Chinese government puts forward the strategy of technological innovation in the year 2006 after the proposing of "National Development Strategy Based Science and Educatcon" in the eleventh five-year plan. It is exactly under this macro-background, the research on the influence of technological innovation on Zhejiang manufacturing export competitiveness has important realistic meaning.This text firstly sums up the literatures concerning the selection of evaluation index of technological innovation and export competitiveness in manufacturing industry at home and abroad and their shortage. Accordning to it, this paper establishs the evaluation index system adapted to the technological innovation and export competitiveness of Zhejiang manufacturing industry. Then, making use of the data of 2003 and 2004, the author epurates three kinds of mode factors of technological innovation and comprehensive export competitiveness factor by factor-analytical method. What's more, we find that the technological innovation level and export competitiveness level in Zhejiang manufacturing industry for two years are placed in lower position according to the analysis of each factor's score.Zhejiang manufacturing technological innovation and export competitiveness are both in low level at the same time, is there a causal link existing? In this paper, the author analyses the influence of the technological innovation on the export competitiveness in total manufacturing level and in different factor-intensive manufacturing level from the view of mode in technological innovation. The empirical results show that: the technological innovation has accelerated the export competitiveness of total manufacturing in Zhejiang, but the acceleration role of the technological innovation comes from the mode of digestion-creation and technology introduction, while the independent innovation dosen't has a prominent role. When analysing the different factor-intensive industries, the author finds that, the independent innovation has played a promoting role in the labor-intensive and technology-intensive industry, and the influence on technology-intensive industry are the biggest; the acceleration role of the digestion-creation mode is only found in capital-intensive industry, but it's not remarkable in both labor-intensive and technology-intensive industry; Technology-introducing model has a role on all of the factor-intensive industry, but bigger in technology-intensive industry than the other two. In the meantime, the author finds that the control variable FDI and Unit Labor Cost (ULC) are the main important factors in Zhejiang manufacturing export competitiveness, each variable of technological innovation has not play a major role in the improvement of export competitiveness. Finally, in accordance with the relevant conclusions, the author brings forward revelent policy and sums up the shortage of this paper.
