| Few institutions touch our life as deep as news. As a part of news reports, news translation plays a more and more important role in the age of information explosion. However, it has attracted less attention than it deserves and much of it has still remained on the linguistic level. In fact, news translation is never a mere shift between different languages but it is under the manipulation imposed by diverse factors. On the one hand, such factors as news value, translation context, and the reader's expectation exert influence on news translation; on the other hand, the translation is also controlled by ideology, culture, poetics and patronage. The control and manipulation of news is in fact an index of power in contemporary society, since information allows policy-makers and bureaucrats to regulate institutions and individual behavior.This thesis follows the thinking of descriptive rather than traditional prescriptive translation studies, and explores the manipulation of news translation via a number of translation and communication theories, such as the theory of news value, the theory of manipulation, the theory of communication effect and Andre Lefevere's ideology and patronage theories. It aims to, first, discover a set of elements that may be more powerful than other elements, a hierarchy of interrelated factors (constraints) that govern the news translation; and second, through analysis of some translated works, describe how the manipulation works. |
