The new technological revolution, esp. the development of IT, has ushered in fundamental changes in the development of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises. Meanwhile, the industrialized economics are increasingly transforming into a higher modality based on knowledge. The 21st century will be an age when the economics swell continuously with knowledge, information and digitalization. The competition in the new economics is characterized with the innovation of knowledge and technology. As far as national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises are concerned, the strategic and operational management employed in the business to build up Core Competence would be the best choice to gain competitive advantage in the new economics. Therefore, the study in the issues related to the Core Competence of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises in China is very instructive. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the origin of Core Competence of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises and the correspondent research tools and range. The national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises develop a slower and later history compared with the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) medical and pharmaceutical enterprises. In recent years, the national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises have developed gradually into industrialization with certain progress due to deeper understanding. However, the development of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises is gravely affected because of the systemic issues such as low level of technology, inadequate utilization of potential resources, incomplete management information system, desperately lack of high-tech talents and insufficient governmental support. Hereby this paper presents the application of the Core Competence of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises with the comparative research protocol and follows the below guidelines, i.e., Ⅰthe integration of theory and practice; Ⅱ the integration of normalized and demonstrative research; Ⅲ the extensive collection of the related materials of the Core Competence of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises. The second part is the theoretical analysis of the Core Competence. It includes the representative viewpoints, definition and discrimination of Core Competence. The theory of Core Competence originated in 1776 and most economists have developed six representative complementary viewpoints about the definition of Core Competence, i.e., resources school, capabilities school, assets school, consumer-surplus school, fundamental-system school, and technological-innovation school. The Core Competence of a company is the exclusive ability in the organization to coordinate diverse production skills and integrate multiple streams of technologies, and support the sustainable competitive advantage of the company. It is characterized with efficient integration, exclusiveness and sustainable competitive advantage. The Core Competence of a company could be a strange concept toward most people. The prevalent misconceptions include the following, i.e.,Ⅰ competitive advantage is the same as Core Competence;Ⅱ Core Competence is a kind of common assets of the company;Ⅲ Core Competence is a kind of certain capabilities of the company;Ⅳ Core Competence is the same as the other assets of the company which depreciate after frequent use; On the contrary, Core Competence is a kind of intangible resources. (The core products are tangible assets produced by core technology, which belongs to intangible assets.)Ⅴ Core Competence could be built up in one night;Ⅵ Core Competence is not concerned with the middle or small business, but only the big business. Meanwhile, Core Competence is different from competitiveness, core capabilities, comprehensive competitive advantage, international competency, etc. The third part of this paper deals with the definition of the Core Competence of national medical and pharmaceutical enterprises and the affective factors.
