As a crucial part of the Eurasian continent, the strategic importance of South Asia can not be ignored because of its location of crossing the Indian Ocean, on the east side of Persian Gulf and the Strait of Malacca and its existence of nuclear forces. With the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the U.S.regards South Asia region as an important concern of its global strategy and then constantly strengthens its military presence within this region in order to combat international terrorism. China, the neighbor of South Asia, will be affected by any action of the United States in this area in terms of either national security or the geopolitics. Therefore, there will certainly be of great practical significance for researching the United States' South Asia strategy after the Cold War, its impact on China's security environment and China's strategic countermeasures. With Obama administration's new strategy in South Asia looming, the analysis and research on its new strategies timely will provide theoretical basis for China to adjust its major foreign policies. The following are the analyses of the U.S.post-Cold War strategy in South Asia and its influence on China's security environment from four aspects:The part one of this dissertation examines the evolution of U.S. strategy in South Asia during and after the Cold War and analyses the important position of the South Asia in U.S.foreign strategy. The interference of U.S.in South Asia apparently involves so many strategic factors:to combat international terrorism, to prevent nuclear proliferation, to prevent China and Russia from uniting India against America and to implement its marine plan, etc.In view of such an important strategic position of South Asia and the changing international situation, the United States timely adjusted and developed its South Asian strategy, so that successive U.S.administrations had different focuses in their South Asian strategies. The second part discusses the main contents and constraints of the post-Cold War U.S.strategy in South Asia. Besides strengthening the military and economic cooperation with South Asian countries and mediating politically to ease nuclear strategic tensions in South Asia, the United States promotes strategic relationship with the India to contain the development of China and Russia and achieves its marine strategy in Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, the effect of implementing U.S.strategy in South Asia will unavoidably suffer restrictions from various factors. The third part focuses on the influence of the U.S.strategy in South Asia on China's security environment.Although China and the United States have common security interests in South Asia, but conflicts and disagreements between these two countries can't be neglected, which will lead to negative impact on China to some extent from the military, political and economic security. The fourth part will predict the development trends of U.S. strategy in South Asia in the three levels of strategic objectives, military policy and foreign policy strategy, and then suggests that China take corresponding countermeasures on military security, economy and energy.
