Extracurricular reading is the important supplement and extension to the Chinese high school language classroom teaching and it is a priority in training of students’ reading ability. it is no doubt that extracurricular reading is a significant way for students to expanse knowledge, enhance spirit level, and cultivate the humanities.The thesis can be divided into four chapters:The firs t chapter is the introduction part. Firstly, this chapter introduces the reason to select such a topic. On the basis of the national leaders’ and scholars’ discussion about the importance of reading, this chapter illustrates the importance of reading, the new curriculum standard’s requirements to extracurricular reading and the position characteristic of Xihaigu region. Secondly, the purpose and significance of the survey is to explore the main problems for high school in extracurricular reading and find out effective strategies to enhance students’ reading in Xihaigu region. It consists of two layers of significant: theory and practice.Finally introduce the main methods, including questionnaire and comparison approach.Chapter two conducts research for current situation of extracurricular reading. This chapter provides an overview of the current situation of the extracurricular reading both at home and abroad, and explains the enlightenment for conducting extracurricular reading at home according to specific requirements of extracurricular reading at aboard. Facing heavy examination stress at home, the current situation of the extracurricular reading of students is worrying, therefore, it is necessary to change the negative current situation, and it should be paid more attention to Xihaigu region.Chapter three conducts analysis for the survey result of extracurricular reading of senior high school students in Xihaigu region. Firstly, sample design and survey implementation is explained. Secondly, comparison and analysis is conducted for the survey result of extracurricular reading of senior high school students in Xihaigu region, including students and teachers these two parts.Chapter four is the key part of this thesis. Research conclusions and implementation proposals are summarized and explained in this chapter. Students, teachers and environment are included in research conclusions. Two major parts are included in implementation proposals. Firstly, guidance for extracurricular reading of students should be strengthened. Guidance is mainly conducted from paying high attention to extracurricular reading, setting reading plan scientifically, recommending reading list reasonably, guiding reading methods scientifically, developing colorful extracurricular reading activities and etc. These six aspects. Secondly, extracurricular reading environment of students should be improved, including family environment, school environment and social environment.
