This paper takes Lahu Autonomous County of Lancang as an example and studies the geography curriculum design under the educational need in minority areas. Lancang County is a minority autonomous county. Due to the historical, geographical and other reasons, the economic and educational level in Lancang County is relatively backward compared with other developed areas. In order to develop local economy, the development of education is the key.This paper reviews and summarizes the current research status and achievements about this topic at home and abroad, defines the concept of educational need, curriculum and curriculum design, and makes analysis on the theoretical basis of curriculum design. Through on-the-spot investigation and visit of the villages of Lahu Nationality, Dai Nationality and Blang Nationality in Lahu Autonomous County of Lancang, it gets to know the current situation of local educational need and geography curriculum design and finds the problems existing in the geography curriculum design; for example: unable to probe into the geography curriculum standards, the geography curriculum design is separated from the local educational need, lack national characteristics, and laggard evaluation. In order to make the geography curriculum design in line with the reality, this paper proposes that the curriculum design meeting the local educational need in minority areas should break the traditional concept of teachers, students, teacher-student relationship and evaluation, and achieve the transformation of these concepts.In terms of the principles of local geography curriculum design in minority areas, the geography curriculum design should meet the local educational need in minority areas and have the characteristics of development and economic. In terms of local geography curriculum content design, it includes the goal structure, content structure, teaching methods and evaluation methods of the local geography curriculum. In order to ensure the effective implementation of the geography curriculum design, the macro adjustment of national education policy, policy support of the local departments in charge of education, and the specific planning and implementation at the school level are needed. As the designer, organizer and coordinator of the curriculum design, teachers should transform in thought and concept and equipped themselves with excellent professional skills and teaching skills. They should constantly improve themselves through external training and, correspondence course and other forms. In addition, not only the development and utilization of the national language culture, local religion culture, production and life knowledge and skills, but also the rational development and utilization of the national local resources are needed.
