Great achievements have been achieved in middle-school physical education and the health-curriculum reform. However, the teaching of track and field, as one of the main teaching contents of junior middle schools' PE lessons, hasn't experienced breakthroughs in the choice or arrangement of its contents as well as in its competition-centred system. Various defects have arisen in the teaching contents of track-and-field teaching practice, which doesn't accord with the new curriculum of physical education.The paper aims at the research into the track-and-field teaching contents of junior middle schools, and conducted a survey on present track-and-field teaching contents of junior middle schools, using all the PE teachers above junior level as well as the students of Pingchao Senior High School, Sanyu Middle School and Henggang Middle School of Tongzhou City as research sample. The research findings show that present track-and-field teaching of junior middle schools ignores the basic value of track and field sports, leaves a gap with realizing new curriculum objectives and with students' interest in physical education as well as the demands of their future development.According to the above problems, the paper, combining qualitative and quantitative research principles, conducted a systemic research into the extension of track-and-field teaching contents, starting from the demands of carrying out Physical Education and Health Currriculum Standards, on the realistic and theoretical basis of analysing the survey on present track-and-field teaching of junior middle schools and the specific function and educational value respectively. On this basis, the paper puts forward new assumption on the construction of track-and-field teaching contents of new type junior middle schools and more reasonable classification of track-and-field teaching, which provides reference strategies and implementing cases for the extension of teaching contents of junior middle schools. I hope the research can provides beneficial reference for the reform and practice of track-and-field teaching contents of junior middle schools.
