In terms of the nature of the organization, university is an academic community. Undergraduates are the members of the community who play multiple roles. It is their rights to participate in the university management. Nowadays, this kind of participation is the tendency for reform and development of higher education around the world as well as a characteristic of the modern university. In our country, with the development of higher education reform, more and more focuses are put on this issue. How to promote undergraduates' participation now becomes an important component of internal management reform system of universities as well as an important subject of higher education management research. Therefore, it is of great practical value to study the present situation and the characteristics of the participation and to explore how to promote it.Based on the undergraduates' participation in the dormitory management in S University of Shanghai as a case study, applying the methods of questionnaire and interview, this thesis is intended to offer a systematic analysis on the participation issue from the four perspectives, that is, awareness, degree, system and influencing factors. The present study is designed to address those following questions: What are the present situation and characteristics of the participation in terms of awareness and degree? What about the system? What are the influencing factors? How to promote this kind of participation? By offering possible answers, the author intends to provide practical basis to the relevant theoretical research, and implications to the practical exploration. This research indicates that undergraduates' participation has been attached attention and awareness in the universities while during the actual practice, the existence of demits are inevitable. From the undergraduates' perspective, most undergraduates are aware of participating and quite active in taking part in the university management. But a small number of undergraduates who have the dependent mentality lack the consciousness of participation. The participation is becoming more and more intensive and extensive; however, the inadequacy and inefficiency still exist. From the university's perspective, though much effort has been made in exploring the multiple ways and effective system, specific and definite procedures and rules are still remain to be absent. The operation system should be better. By investigating into the influencing factors, this research argues that undergraduates and university are the two major aspects on the participation issue, including undergraduates' motivation, attitude, ability, and the attitude of university management towards undergraduates as well as the guarantee of rules and regulations. Thus, the thesis offers certain strategies to promote undergraduates' participation. (1) to cultivate and enhance undergraduates' awareness. Not only undergraduates but also university must attach importance to cultivate undergraduates' awareness of participating in the university management. (2) to define and classify the participation by its content and range. The contents include democratic decision-making, supervision and affairs-management. As regards the participation range, the undergraduates' limitations in their own knowledge and ability must be taken into consideration, and according to profit-relevant and professional principle, different participating extent must be adopted under different conditions. (3) to form a better operation system. We must follow the principles of democracy, education, feasibility and so on, on the other hand, we need to explore more forms and ways of participation and establish necessary systems to guarantee, encourage and limit undergraduates' participating rights. (4) to help undergraduates to develop a correct attitude and motivation as well as improve their participating ability from the undergraduates' perspective, to create a democratic atmosphere, to establish a "student-oriented" philosophy, to better the system, to motivate undergraduates, to ensure their participation from the university's perspective.
