After years of reform and opening up, China has been developing rapidly both socially and economically. Consequently, the proportion of the private economy in the national economy has gradually become an important component of the socialist market economy. According to statistics, of the top 500 enterprises in China, the proportion of private enterprises rose from 3.8% in 2002 to 14.8% in 2004. The rapid growth of private enterprises has made great contribution to the development of productivity, regional economic prosperity and the growth of state revenues. However, China's private enterprises, in particular small and medium private enterprises, have rather low management levels and poor competitiveness. In recent years, with the increasing improvement of the market mechanism, private enterprises'limitations have become more explicit. The most prominent issue is human resources management. In this thesis, the private enterprises'growth is categorized into different stages. Among them, the private enterprises in the growth period confront the risk of "Glass Ceiling" or "prematurely senile." The former human resources management has been unable to meet the need of the enterprises'development, which becomes its major bottleneck. In the long-run private enterprises should continue growing up. The focus should be on the specific life period. Human resources management needs to balance between the short-term effect and long-term effect. This will contribute to the rapid development of enterprises and their long-term strategic planning. At present, most of the local human resources operations only apply to large enterprises in mature period. Research in the different stages'human resources operations of Chinese private enterprise is still relatively limited in theory. Therefore, Private enterprises in the growth period could only "cross the river by feeling the stones". In the light of human resource management theories and practices, this thesis analyzes the private enterprises in the growth period, and tries to offer some suggestions to effective operation.
