Mechanism Of Function Of Safety Culture On Safety Performance In Construction:an Empirical Study

As a pillar industry of national economy, the safety of construction related to people's lives and property. But in recent years, the safety of China's construction accident rate has been high. The state and the government promulgated a series of policies and regulations to control the safety of construction. The vast majority of construction companies have taken almost all of the engineering approach to prevent accident. But the effect is not good. Statistics show that85%to95%of these accidents are due to illegal operation, illegal command and violate labor discipline. These phenomena relate to people's cultural quality greatly. Its underlying factors is the company's safety culture. Now researchers from China begin to focus on studies of safety culture, except for some shallow discussions and qualitative summaries, the quantitative or semi-quantitative studies are few.This paper discusses the details of corporate safety culture and the mechanism of function of safety culture on safety performance in construction. By carefully combing the previous literature, this study develops the questionnaire to test corporate safety culture and safety performance. By delivering these questionnaires to a number of construction companies from Sichuan, Jiangsu, Shenzhen and Tianjin. Ultimately, EFA showed that the factors of safety culture are safety material culture, safety system culture and safety concept culture. SEM suggests that the proposed hypotheses are largely supported by the data. In summary, this dissertation contributes to the literature as follows.First, safety culture in construction includes safety material culture, safety system culture and safety concept culture. Safety material culture refers to equipment and technology used in the production environment such as cultural artifacts, in order to protect employees' physical and mental safety. Safety system culture refers to a variety of safety rules, regulations and standards. Safety concept culture refers to values, beliefs, ideals and other ideological things on producing safely throughout the organization.Second, the statistical analysis with AMOS7.0suggests that in construction safety material culture has influence on safety behavior through safety system culture and safety concept culture. Safety system culture has positive effect on safety compliance and safety anticipation through safety concept culture. Safety concept culture has positive effect on safety compliance and safety anticipation.Third, in construction safety compliance has positive effect on safety outcomes. The findings show that safety anticipation has significant influence on safety outcomes through safety compliance.
