Based on the Skopos theory, which is an approach to translation, the author translatedtwo chapters excerpted from The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The central rule of translation isthe Skopos of translation which means the function of the target text. As for translating thistext, the skopos of the translation is to serve the readers by expressing it’s suspenseful andinteresting. Translator should try the best to keep the thought and the style of the originalworks, at the same time to achieve the requirement of the Foreign Language Teaching andResearch Press. Before translating, the author made a lot of preparation such as learn aboutthe writer and his writing style, study the novel’s background, and unify the translation of thenames of people, places and proper nouns by the help of the Internet and paper pages, laying asolid foundation for the translation work. Based on the Skopos theory, the author chose thechapters of The Mystery of Edwin Drood as the source text and translated it into Chinese.Some translation methods, such as division, free translation, will be used in the target text.
