The agreement is the signed written material agreed by both or several parties through mutual agreement to protect their respective legitimate rights and interests. The agreement is a legally binding official document, with a high degree of seriousness and rigorousness. It has its own unique word characteristics, sentence features, translation principles and methods. All these characteristics result in the complexity, seriousness and uniqueness of their translation. Above all, agreement translation is the same as other translation requiring faithfulness and smoothness. That is to say translators should not only translate the agreement exactly, but also make the translation smooth and fluent. What’s more, agreement translation has to keep faithful to the special style of agreement, for it is professional and with legal validity. Only in this way can translators get exact, fluent and idiomatic translation. Therefore, when doing agreement translation, translators should be good at both English and Chinese writing, acquire a certain amount of knowledge of laws and agreements, understand and grasp the unique word characteristics, sentence features, principles and methods for agreement translation besides the ability of translating ordinary words. Thus, the first part of this paper is to review the status and research actualities of agreement translation in our country briefly.
