| News plays an important role in cultural and information dissemination. With increasing link of world economic and culture, news translation seems like more important. Skopos theory is a main theory in the school of Functionalism. It emphasizes the importance of translation and regards the original as informant. It stands for changing the form of the original even deleting some unimportant information to realize its communicative purpose. It has been proved that Skopos theory can guide news which is a kind of content text translation. Skopos theory includes three basic rules:skopos, coherence and fidelity rule, among which skopos rule is the principal one. With the guidance of Skopos theory and knowledge of the characteristics of news language in vocabulary and syntax, this paper discusses Chinese translation of English news. In vocabulary, short simple and new words are much common. As for its syntax characteristics, short sentences are used much more often than long and complicated sentences, but in this paper subordinate clause and composite sentences are discussed. Based on Skopos theory and English news characteristics, the author brings forth some translation methods, for example literal translation with annotation, melonymy, transforming and so on. Finally it draws a conclusion that Skopos theory can guide the translation of English news, English news has its own features. In order to promote cultural development and exchange, translators should choose a suitable method and be guided by the three rules. |
