Nouns of locality indicate a direction or position, and are essential for mankind to relate to their surroundings, being an important spatial concept. Chinese and Korean both have nouns of locality, with both similarities and differences.This paper investigates and compares the nouns of locality上(shang) and下(xia) in Chinese with (?)(sang),(?)(ha),(?)(wui) and (?)(arae) in Korean. The objective of this paper is to find the points of similarity and difference between Chinese and Korean nouns of locality by means of comparative analysis and error analysis. This will be a modest aid to Chinese students of Korean and Korean students of Chinese, as well as enabling a greater understanding within the field of linguistics about nouns of locality in Chinese and Korean, their differences and misunderstandings about them. This in turn will support Chinese-Korean translation as well as teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.This paper uses comparative and error analysis, first comparing and contrasting the semantic meaning of the Chinese nouns of locality上and下with the Korean(?), and (?) and analysing their basic and extended meanings. Following that, a test is employed to investigate the misunderstandings of Korean students about上and下, analysing the causes of such misunderstandings and thus providing the basis for better teaching methods for nouns of locality.This paper is divided into five chapters, not including the test:The first chapter is the preface, laying out the objectives and significance of this research, current research in Korea and China on the subject, the scope and method of this paper and its theoretical basis.The second chapter compares the basic meaning of the nouns of locality上and下wit(?)and (?). The respective nouns are first introduced and then the differences in basic meaning between nouns of locality in Chinese and Korean are discussed.The third chapter explores the differences in extended meaning between the nouns of locality上and下on the one hand and(?) and (?) on the other. First, the nouns of locality’s extended meanings are introduced before a comparison and contrast between extended meaning in nouns of locality in Chinese and Korean.The fourth chapter consists of a test and error analysis of how Korean students use the nouns of locality上,下,(?)and (?). The content of the test and its methods are introduced followed by the results and causes of the errors made. Finally, this paper offers practical and effective guidelines for teaching on this aspect.The fifth chapter is the conclusion, explaining the achievements and limitations of this paper’s research.
