Citizen participation in political affairs is an important part of democracy and acritical indicator to show the development of political modernization of a country. Withthe development of democracy in our country the importance of citizens’ participationin political affairs has been widely accepted and citizens have gradually learned to takethe initiative to participate in the political process and enhance the level of theirinvolvement. However, in the countryside, political participation of the peasants stillneeds to be further improved: on the one hand, the level of their political participationremains low, problems such as deficiency of participating ability and the seriousphenomenon of non-institutional participation still exist, while the prompt and effectivepolitical participation of the peasants is impeded by the underlying economic andmaterial conditions in the rural area, which is a huge hindrance to the politicalmodernization of the countryside; on the other hand, as ecological woes brought aboutby the local governments’ value pursuit centering GDP emerge continuously and causemore and more damage to the rural area, economic interests of peasants are harmed and,moreover, their right to subsistence is threatened, which seriously restricts thedevelopment of the countryside and impacts the national economy and the country’smodernization drive. Under such a circumstance, it’s especially urgent to change thecurrent situation of insufficient participation of the peasants against the background ofecological crisis and enhance the level of their participation.This paper tries to study the feasibility of dealing with ecological crisis byencouraging the political participation of the peasants, and carry out the analysis of thecurrent situation of the peasants’ participation in the solution of ecological problems,arising problems in their political participation, causes, and a coping mechanism aimedat these problems, so as to enhance the peasants’ politically participating ability andbetter solve the ecological problem in the countryside.
