In face of the intensive competition in market, the competitionbetween universities is becoming much more fierce today. In the processof scientific innovation, does cooperation really make some difference? And at the same time, how can a university achieve a synergistic balancebetween competition and cooperation in carrying out scientificinnovations? In this thesis, we take six universities as samples and conduct a casestudy. Three of them are the most outstanding science and engineeringuniversities in China (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University,Zhejiang University) and the other three are American universities(Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California,Berkeley, Stanford University). We make an analysis of the organizationstatus quo of the cooperation, and different cooperation method validity isanalyzed and we also make a difference examination between cooperationtype and validity of thesis. All these are based on the SCI theses of the sixuniversities from2006to2010.Based on the results of this thesis, we find that in the scientificinnovation process, cooperative trend has become increasingly significant.Innovation systems of Chinese and American universites are nowrespectively in different collaborative innovation state. In the process ofscientific innovation, the validity of cooperation type will affect thedecision that which institution to choose. Currently, the difference ofcooperation type between disciplines is not very clear, but the universitiestend to be distinctive. Also, taking part in other institution’s research willhelp to improve the validity of theses. It is necessary for the government to make a policy from theperspective of synergistic innovation in order to make it at the right time. And for those cooperation types that do not perform well during thescientific innovation, the government should make some policy toimprove it. For universities, it is important to take part in otherinstitutions’ scientific innovation and to make the most use of those typesof cooperation that perform well during the process of innovation.
