"Asia-Pacific Rebalancing" The US-Vietnam Relationship Under The Strategy

This paper conducts a study on factors both driving and impeding thedevelopment of US-Vietnam relationship by drawing conclusion from their improvedrelations and features in recent years and analyzing strategic position of Vietnam inUS Asia-Pacific strategy and the content and context of its “pivot to Asia” strategy,which was introduced by US since Obama was sworn in. Through such study, aprediction can be made on the prospect and influence of US-Vietnam relations uponChina, thus rendering policy suggestions for China to address the rattling bilateralrelations between US and Vietnam.This paper is divided into three parts, namely, introduction, the main body andconclusion. The introduction part depicts purpose and significance, literature review,research method and layout of this paper. The main body contains three chapters. Thefirst chapter analyzes the content and context of US “pivot to Asia” strategy. Throughstudy on US action logic in the Asia-Pacific region, conclusion can be drawn on thestrategic value of Vietnam in its “pivot to Asia” strategy. The second chapter delvesinto new features in US-Vietnam relationship by combing recent history of improvedpolitical, economic and trade and military relations. The third chapter discussesfactors both driving and impeding the development of US-Vietnam relations andpredicts the prospect of this relationship and its influence over China while taking intoaccount the reality that their bilateral relations have showed momentum for good.In the final conclusion, US enhanced its political, economic and militaryrelations with Vietnam as a stimulant for its Asia-Pacific strategy and by introducingthe “pivot to Asia” strategy, US has gained a strategic upper hand. While improvedUS-Vietnam relations contribute to the interests of both parties, China should be fullyaware of its influence and take corresponding tackling measures.
