The piano accompaniment is a kind of performing arts, which falls into the specification of piano performance in the field of music, while the dance piano accompaniment is a cross-disciplinary subject which belongs to dance. Music is the soul of dance, and the piano accompaniment is becoming one of the indispensable teaching aids in dance classes of higher institutes of arts. With the rapid development of dance education, piano accompaniment teachers have to meet more and more strict requirements and prove himself an rounded talent. As a key link in the dance teaching, the performance of a piano accompanist has a direct impact on dance performances and the teaching quality, and therefore his/her role can not be ignored. Although there are a lot of people who work as dance piano accompanists in China, but most of them specialized in piano, acoustic piano accompaniment or instrumental piano accompaniment, and have little theoretical knowledge in professional dance accompaniment.This pape explores the content of piano accompaniments in the teaching of dance majors in Beijing Sports University by using the methods of literature reviews, expert interviews, questionnaires, and mathematical statistics. The conclusions are as follows:1. A piano accompanist should choose the right type of music for different dance groups. A piano accompanist should be able to choose the music, be good at playing the piano and work well with different dance teachers.2. It is inevitable that every dance piano accompanist will meet some problems in their work which can be solved as their performances improve and they become more experienced. A piano accompanist should, on the basis of a full understanding the essence of dance, follow the inner laws of the music, work for the perfect combination of music and dance and then apply it in his/her teaching and research. In this way, he/she can help the students create the perfect art of dance and combine music and dance in a perfect fashion. 3. With its focus on how to transfer the message in the melody, rhythm, and other musical elements to dancers, this paper explores the importance of dance piano accompaniment in dance teaching.4.
