In order to improve the overall quality of the teachers, to improve the quality of basiceducation in the central and western regions and poor areas, from2007, six normaluniversities directly under the Ministry of Education began the implementation of freenormal education for students. Since this policy was published, it has caused the wideattention in all circles of society and free normal students have become a special group ofconcern. To cultivate excellent free normal students for basic education services, the mostimportant thing is to make them fall in love with this career, understand the occupationvalue and significant responsibility as teachers and make them possess positive, activeattitude in the work. Therefore, the level of professional identity of free normal students notonly affects their job satisfaction, also more directly affects whether they can fully beinvested in education, determines the stability of teachers stuff and the quality of education.In the thesis, the author made a survey from four dimensions which are professionalvolition, professional value, professional expectations, and professional efficacy to grasp thesituation of pre-service teachers’ professional identity. Taking the students of a certain gradein certain Normal University English majors as researching object, this thesis uses acombination of methods that combine questionnaire investigation and interview, andexplains the results of the survey analyzed by SPSS19.0. Besides, as one part of researchobjects of this study, the professional identity sense of in-service teachers, who havegraduated as free normal students, plays a comparative role that helps to understand thestrengths and weaknesses of the campus students’.The results of this study found: firstly, the professional identity level of the free normalstudents of certain Normal University English major is high; the professional identity ofgirls is higher than boys, only child’s professional identity is lower than non-only child; theplace of domicile and family income both impact on their teachers’ professional identity;secondly, the majority of free normal students have no confidence and willpower inteaching a lifetime or10years for their relative weaknesses are on the professional volitionidentity.As a matter of fact, the phenomenon is caused by many reasons, like salary, workingpressures or professional burnout. Therefore, to improve their professional volition identityin the future education of free normal education is the key. So both the society and normaluniversities should take some measures to solve these problems, for example, improving thewelfare of social status of teachers, setting up some courses or activities to strengthenstudents’ professional volition education from the beginning of normal study and etc. to make great contributions to train more and more outstanding teachers for basic education.
