Nowadays, the evaluation system of college students’theoretical courses in China has the following characteristics:a) summative evaluation is most widely used in terms of evaluation system; b) close-book exam is still the most preferable regarding the testing method; c) concerning the evaluation indicator, most of the exams are designed to test students’memory of knowledge. The reasons behind are:the profound and lasting influence of the examination culture, the tremendous market of administrative thinking and the strong inertia of convenient principle. Thus, this kind of evaluation system has comparatively strong negative effect. It is widely believed by college teachers and students that current evaluation system could not reflect students’true proficiency and ability. There are mounting demands for an evolution of current evaluation system, attaching importance to students’ability and the factor of the learning process.The fourth generation evaluation is a responsive method that symbol by co-construction, using the methodology of constructivism, through negotiation and responses; it becomes the best solution to this evolution. Using literature research method, survey research method and comparative research method, this thesis expresses the significance of the applying of the fourth generation evaluation in the evaluation system of college students’theoretical courses in China.By interpreting the educational objectives of college students and analyze the evaluation method of foreign colleges, the thesis provides four basic criteria to apply the fourth generation evaluation:balancing scientific evaluation and qualitative description; relating the real situation as well as consultation through dialogue; and combining preset standards and dynamic indicators. And the procedures of this new evaluation method include three main aspects:conclude evaluation protocols; emphasizes the evaluation of the study processes; and enrich the method of evaluate the study result. The thesis also explores the weakness of the fourth generation evaluation method and presents a supportive system to offset.
