Running mechanism is one of the most important parts and undertakes the essential task of movement and support. The strength of running mechanism has great impact on the reliability of the shearer loader. Nowadays, because of many reasons, such as, the poor working condition, heavy impulsive load and exposed drive, the strength of running mechanism is not high. Specifically, the most common failure of running mechanism is the tooth break of running gear and the tear of sliding shoes. These problems can lead to the shutdown of the whole shearer loader, causing great financial loss. As a consequence, the strength analysis and optimal design of running mechanism have great significance on reliability of the whole shearer loader. The main contents of paper are as follows:(1)Based on Hertz theory and Cantilever theory, the contact stress and bending stress was calculated; Three gearing types of SL750 running gear and pin gear was established by using APDL; The maximum value and distribution of contact stress and bending stress was obtained; The ANSYS results was compared with the theory results. Finally, the main reason of the failure of the running gear was also gained.(2)Based on Orthogonal Experimental Method, the experimental results were obtained, calculating the contact stress of running gear and pin gear and the bending stress of running gear. By direct comparison and applying minimal rule, the variation of three stresses was observed. By the range analysis, the main parameter which had great influence on three stresses and the influence rules were both obtained. Meanwhile, the optimal combination of three factors was gained, which could increase the contact and bending strength.(3)The force state of whole shearer was built, considering several constraint equations, such as structure layout, dynamic parameters and coal seam dip angle. The value of sliding shoes in different conditions was calculated by writing Matlab programs. Thepotential force area of sliding shoes was analyzed and the maximum stress and maximum transformation of sliding shoes was obtained.By analyzing the strength of running system, the main reason of the broken tooth gear was discovered and the maximum stress and deformation of sliding shoes in different working conditions was gained. Meanwhile, the running gear was optimized by Orthogonal Experimental Method, increasing the strength of the running gear.
