Primary school campus is the main study area for school-age children. Theoutdoor space of primary school campus is the major place where student activitiesare conducted for school-age children. In terms of the domestic present status, mostof the outdoor space of primary school campuses is only used in PE class or duringthe recess time, with one single function. The school environment is constantlyimproving in means of afforestation and aesthetics, which kind of designing stylelacks consideration for the all-round development of school-age children.School-age children are in a special stage of development with incompletecognition and imaginal thinking, thus there is a great need to integrate booklearning and environment cognition in this stage. On the basis of the characteristics of mental and physical development ofschool-age children, the author proposes a new method of making primary schoolcampus space a supplement and extension of classroom instruction, that isinvolving learning landscape into primary school campus space construction, through carrying out field research of typical primary school campus space indomestic large, medium and small cities, conducting questionnaire survey amongschool age children, as well as referring to related domestic and international cases.Learning landscape is a kind of landscape design in which the curriculumknowledge is manifested in various ways. It not only allows children to participatein and experience, but also exerts subtle influence on the mental and physicaldevelopment of school-age children by way of amusement. In accordance with theprimary school teaching materials, the author classifies learning landscapes, explores means of construction systemically, concludes the principles of involvinglearning landscape into the outdoor space of primary school campus anddemonstrates all these points by a design practice. It is the author’s hope that thisdesign practice could help school-age children to receive knowledge informationmore easily, make the outdoor space of primary school campus more rich andmeaningful, and improve the quality of outdoor space of primary school campus.
