Abstract/Summary:
This report describes an interpreting practice the author conducted for a bilingualcommunion of Guangzhou Zion Church. The author chooses two of a series ofinterpreting tasks for case analysis and probes into several interpretive approaches thatcan be adopted in the interpreting. This report gives a full description to all phases of the interpreting tasksincluding pre-task preparation, task process and post-task summary. Based on ananalysis of the recorded transcription and a self-evaluation of his consecutiveinterpreting performance, the author studies typical difficulties that frequently occurin sermon interpreting, including over-repetition, chapter jump, ambiguity of logicand culture-loaded words. Based on his own case analysis, the author concludes thatthese difficulties can be solved by adopting different interpretive approachesincluding omission, reorganization and paraphrase. After collecting the evaluation onthe author’s performance from interpreting users, the author concludes that what theinterpreting users focus is in accordance with the goal of interpretive theory, namely, the sense instead of language form. The author hopes that this report can help otherinterpreters better understand interpretive approaches and offer references forinterpreters in relevant fields.
