This thesis is a practice report based on the consecutive interpreting simulation of the seminar entitled “Civil Discourse in American Politics”. This was an academic seminar co-sponsored by Delaware State University and the William P. Frank Foundation in the United States. This seminar featured recondite content, abundant political terms, and speakers with diverse backgrounds. Many scholars have conducted theoretical studies based upon Daniel Gile’s Interpretation Comprehension Equation(C=KL+ELK+A). Nevertheless, the author does in-depth research with regard to integrating the Equation with practice in her study. She, at first, analyzes typical problems in her practice in terms of knowledge of the language and extra-linguistic knowledge under the guidance of the Equation. Then, she presents the problem-solving strategies, such as improvement of listening discrimination, enlargement of vocabulary, and acquisition of bilingual grammar with regard to the enhancement of language proficiency, and intensification of professional knowledge, employment of context analysis, and cultivation of cross-cultural awareness for the purpose of accumulating extra-linguistic knowledge. Finally, the author elaborates on the importance of the enhancement of language proficiency and the accumulation of extra-linguistic knowledge for the interpreter’s comprehension of the source text so as to guide her to perform with excellence in future interpretation practices. The author presents this report in the hope that it will be of use to other interpreters in the future.
