A Report On Guide Interpreting On Gulangyu Islet

Since the reform and opening-up and the accession to the WTO,China has made tremendous progress in economic development and enjoyed extensive contact with the rest of the world.Along with the booming economy,tourism industry in China is also developing rapidly.More and more foreign tourists are attracted by beautiful landscapes and historical sites in China.When visiting scenic spots in China,foreign visitors have opportunities to get a close look at Chinese culture.As a result,guide interpreting is of great importance,especially to foreigners who need a guide in their trips.It is generally known that interpretation is an intercultural communication.Therefore,interpreters are required to take cultural differences into consideration when interpreting and most importantly,cater to the needs of the client.This report is based on the author's practice as an interpreter for a Chinese tour guide and a foreign tourist on Gulangyu Islet.This report describes the whole interpreting task,including the pre-task preparation and post-task analysis.In this report,with the transcription of the interpreting task,the author intents to make an analysis of the problems encountered in the interpreting task and attempts to figure out corresponding solutions.This report analyzes the interpreting strategies adopted by the author under the guidance of skopos theory,such as amplification,transliteration plus explanation,paraphrasing and omission.In light of the client feedback and self-reflection,the report provides some suggestions for guide interpreters.It is hoped that this report could be of some help for guide interpreters to improve their interpreting performance.
