The translation materials the author has collected include contracts, laws andregulations, legal thesis and other legal documents, totally about150thousand words. In my translation, I find a lot of words that have no equivalent meanings betweenEnglish and Chinese, and this phenomenon is called lexical gap. In translating theRegulations on Real Estate Ownership Registration of Chongqing, I noticed thatbesides the general features of law such as accuracy, preciseness, solemnness, thiskind of local regulation has very obvious Chinese flavor, and that’s why there are lotsof lexical gaps. This translation report explains and exemplifies lexical gap. Its keypart illustrates the practical use of various translation methods in dealing with lexicalgap, and makes a detailed analysis of the lexical gap in the translation of thisregulation. The translation methods I use in translating this regulation includetransliteration, literal translation, free translation, reduction and interpretation.
