Strategies In The English-Chinese Translation Of Automobile Repair Technical Texts

With the rapid development of modern society and economy, people’s living standards in China are improving and people around the world can also communicate easily. Meanwhile, automobiles play a significant role in people’s life. Automobile repair technology is progressing with the advancement of automobile industry as well. Currently, with the increasing technical communications between China and other countries, more advanced technology in automobile repair is introduced to China.Different from common English texts, automobile technical English texts have professional language features and technical features. As for translators, familiarizing themselves with the features of the automobile technical texts affects the translation quality and readers’ understanding about the texts. Therefore, how to translate English-Chinese technical texts well has become much more important.On the basis of the translation project-Chapter 53 of Automotive Technology the author has been engaged in, this thesis tries to have a deep analysis of the automobile technical texts in order to find a better way to translate English automobile technical texts into Chinese and benefit the target readers.This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is an overview of the translation project-Chapter 53 of Automotive Technology, including background and translation process of the project. The second chapter analyzes features of the project text, including the text language features and the description of the features of the figures and procedures in the text. The third chapter summarizes some commonly used strategies in English-Chinese translation in the automobile texts such as strategies of terminology translation, conversion strategies and strategies of passive sentences translation. Hopefully, these strategies summarized from the translation project can help translators improve efficiency and quality of the translation project. The fourth chapter gives assessments of the whole project, including comments from the translation company and clients, and self-evaluation and suggestions from the author.The author holds that the following steps are important in terms of strategies in the English-Chinese translation of automobile technical texts:collecting relevant information in the preparation work; reading the technical texts to get the main idea and know the features of the texts before translation; creating term databases in the translation process; using reasonable ways to translate passive sentences; emphasizing the objectivity of the English-Chinese translation of automobile technical texts.The author only summarizes the strategies in the English-Chinese translation of automobile technical texts based on his own experience. The author needs to conduct more researches about the strategies in the Chinese-English translation of automobile technical texts in the future. To translate the texts well, the author also has to improve both Chinese and English skills.
