Note-taking is an essential skill for consecutive interpretation. It complements the interpreter’s working memory and makes a more logical analysis of source information. In addition to recording key points, the interpreter should also present the logic of source information in notes with the use of logic markers and note-taking layout to ensure accurate and logical delivery. Due to the grammatical differences of Chinese and English, the sentences are organized in different ways. Context is often used in Chinese to reflect the logical relationship between sentences and sentence elements; English tends to present logic by using coordinating or subordinating conjunctions, leading to long and complicated sentence structure. The long sentences with complicated logical structure have significantly affected the performance of interpreters. With Daniel Gile’s Effort Model as its theoretical framework, the thesis designs experiments to analyze the relationship between the logic of notes and interpretation quality. In quantitative analysis, the writer quantifies the performance of each interpreter sentence by sentence and compares the average grade of interpreters with the characteristics of sentences. The experiment data confirms that "the logical structure of a sentence has an impact on interpretation quality". Then the writer quantifies the logical structure of notes and compares it with average interpretation grade of the interpreters. The data confirms that "clear logical structure in notes can reduce the negative impact of long and complicated sentences and improve interpretation quality".In qualitative analysis, the writer analyzes the notes and interpretation of several interpreters from the perspective of logic markers and note-taking layout to prove the effect of "improving the notes’ logic structure" in tackling long sentences with complicated logical structure.
