With the rapid development of social life, an endless stream of new words and their new usage have arisen. In order to improve the efficiency of words’ expression, and in accordance with the principles of economics of language, without affecting the expression and understanding the case, people make words’ length short. So abbreviations came into being. In ancient times, abbreviations have been known for academics. In modern time, needless to say, abbreviations have become indispensable part of language and communication. As abbreviations are widely used, via the thumbnail mode to create new words is one of the primary sources in modern Chinese lexical system. Abbreviations are not only important for the Chinese vocabulary teaching, but it is also a main problems of second language acquisition. Especially, in the high teaching stage, abbreviations are the focal points of teaching.Firstly, the article discussed the category and attributes of abbreviations by applying relevant linguistic knowledge from the beginning of 20th century to contemporary. Then, establish the basis for this article by analyzing the research situation of abbreviations and abbreviations’ study in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Secondly, the paper elaborated the concept and the definition of abbreviations’ study by the research method of literature retrieval, analysis, and comparative analysis. Then explore the relationship between the source language and abbreviations, abbreviations’ formation, and the characteristics of abbreviations. By statistical analysis abbreviations in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the paper has an depth comparative analysis of the teaching abbreviations’ purpose, and the differences between other vocabulary teaching.Finally, this paper has a summary and discussion of the abbreviations in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and analyze the students’ learning difficulty and its origin of abbreviations. Having a thinking of the way to in improving abbreviations teaching and the problems that should pay attention to. Moreover, the paper compared through research abbreviations appearing in the two editions of modern Chinese dictionary. Though the analysis and summary of chapter four, I suggest making abbreviation teaching as an important knowledge, and want to discuss the abbreviation teaching in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
