With the development of economic globalization, English plays an increasingly important role in foreign exchanges. Because of the rapid development of Chinese economy, more and more enterprises have entered international market, and more and more foreign companies have turned to domestic market, which needs to improve the requirements of personnel quality. As half of higher education, higher vocational education must assume the mission of training high skilled talents for enterprises. However, it has been proved that the graduates from many higher vocational colleges do not have employment competitiveness. A big reason is that they are poor at using English even though they have learnt English systematically but gained poor communication skills and lacked the ability of dealing with their future jobs in English, which can’t satisfy the enterprise’s needs for high skilled interdisciplinary talents who can both understand major and English.However, existing traditional Public English teaching mode doesn’t carry out curriculum and teaching from the perspective of students’ employment, while too much attention is paid to systemic theory knowledge and students’ English application skills are ignored, failing to take English teaching and students’ future jobs demands relatively, which makes English teaching lack of professional characteristics. As a new concept, Career English can put “occupation elements” into Public English teaching. It is a new teaching mode that combines English teaching with students’ future employment organically because it gives great importance to cultivating students’ abilities in solving problems in English in their future work, and fully embodies practical and occupational characteristics of English.Through the basis analysis of career teaching in higher vocational colleges, a firm foundation is laid for carrying out the reform of Career English teaching. However, theoretical research will play its research value only after put into practice. After a few years of practice teaching, initial success has been achieved, but there are still many indispensable problems in this huge and systematical reform process. In order to promote Career English teaching reform further, students, teachers, teaching process and enterprises are looked into with Yangling Vocational and Technical College taken as a research case. Basing on teaching practice, the investigations are made to fully understand main problems in the reform of Career English teaching and the differences between Career English teaching and businesses’ needs. As a result, the article proposes necessary measures from the point of view of effectively promoting Career English teaching reform, such as updating teaching concepts, optimizing teaching contexts, and creating new teaching modes and methods, hoping to double the effort on Career English teaching reform in vocational colleges. The research of this paper not only further adds to the research theory of Career English teaching reform, but also brings about some practical significance in promoting the reform of Career English teaching in higher vocational colleges.
